Prints + Patterns
All of our textiles are handwoven ‘cloth’ native to various regions of West Africa produced using centuries-old techniques that are still used today. These cloths, tied so closely with cultural symbolism, were once so valuable that they were widely traded as a form of currency. Today, many tribes will include particular patterns and colors of their cloth in gifts to special guests, dowries and you will certainly find it being worn on special occasions by African people all over the world.
Indigo is one of the most common and oldest dyes in the world. Amongst other things it symbolises fertility, wealth and abundance. Most of our current range of the cloth on our bags have Indigo striped patterns as the foundation of the design. The brown-reddish colors often come from plants native to the area the textile is from, such as cola nut, tree bark, fermented mud or certain flowers.
We work with many different textile producers, who have different specialties and are from different places. Like the people who make them, each of your bags are unique. The patterns you receive may be wider, narrower, darker or lighter shades than the photos you see here. But when you order a bag from one of our three collections, you will receive these leather / textile color combinations that belong to the collection you chose.
